The Underground Data Center HQ of My Super-Villain Dreams
Originally a nuclear bunker, this underground data center for one of Sweden’s largest ISPs has greenhouses, waterfalls, German submarine engines, simulated daylight (and can withstand a hit from a hydrogen bomb.)
And for the life of me, I’d swear it was the headquarters from Danger Diabolik.

HQ features include :
- German submarine engines for backup power: Backup power is handled by two Maybach MTU diesel engines producing 1.5 Megawatt of power.
- Just for fun the people at Pionen have also installed the warning system (sound horns) from the original German submarine.
- Triple redundancy Internet backbone access: The network has full redundancy with both fiber optics and extra copper lines with three different physical ways into the mountain.
- Work environment with simulated daylight and greenhouses: For a pleasant working environment the data center has simulated daylight, greenhouses, waterfalls and a huge 2600-liter salt water fish tank. ( Presumably filled with sharks. Sharks with laser beams. )

Robert Lesser Robot Collection Auction Ends Tomorrow
Here’s your chance to own part of one of the most amazing tin toy robot collections in the US. The Lesser collection has hit the auction block, and the last of the bids are due tomorrow. Back in 2000, I got a chance to see the Lesser robots at the Brooklyn Museum of Art, and it rocked my world. It was the first look I ever got at an original Mr. Atomic, Radicon Robot, Horikawa Space Station… < sigh >
Now everything must go. From a boxed Lilliput Robot, the first mass marketed robot toy, to Hook Robot and a Tremendous Mike .

Robot Playgrounds of the Future / 1960s.
Ira Gobler sent this fantastic pic and link to the Space-Age playground of our dreams this morning.
Best of the lot is Giganta, the playground automaton that converts imprisoned children into sliding arm-launched projectiles. Which is presumably what the catalog manufacturer means by “A Robot That Automatically Produces Fun.”
Wow. I want to go play in the giant mechanical brain. I’ve seen a few of the rocket-slides back in the day, but never a Giganta. Has anyone seen one of these in the wild?
No commentsSpace Age Inspiration of Pop Culture
“Greetings, my friend. We are all interested in the future, for that is where you and I are going to spend the rest of our lives.”
- Criswell, Plan 9 From Outer Space
As part of their excellent coverage of the 50th Anniversary of Sputnik, The New York Times is also running an article on the influence of the Space Age on pop culture.
The article runs the whole gamut, from Sci-Fi movies to Googie architecture, but my favorite part of the pop-culture sidebar is the inclusion of this goofy musical tribute to Sputnik clip.
